How To Run Dos Games/App.. ( With DOSBox )

After downloading, install DOSBox to any directory. Also, make a folder to put all your old games in. I put DOSBox in C:\DOSBox, and my old games directory is C:\OLDGAMES. I put a game in my OLDGAMES directory, TESTDRIV, which is Test Drive, an old racing game. Your directories should look like this:

Running a game

Now, the hardest part, getting games to run. First, run dosbox.exe in your DOSBox folder. Remember that OLDGAMES directory you created in Step 1? You have to basically set that as new directory just for DOSBox. Essentially, it's going to become the C:\> drive of DOSBox. So, type:

Z:\>MOUNT C C:\OLDGAMES Drive C mounted as local directory C:\OLDGAMES\

To dissect the above:

  • MOUNT: Tells the program to mount a directory
  • C: Tells the program what you want your new drive to be called (leaving it as C: is fine)
  • C:\OLDGAMES: This is the directory I want to set as the new drive for DOSBox, because all my games are in it. If you created a different directory, write in the directory you created.

(Note: If you want to mount a CD-ROM instead of a folder, type this:

Z:\>MOUNT D D:\ -t cdrom MSCDEX installed. Drive D is mounted as CDRom D:\

(Note: "cdrom" is case sensitive and must be lowercase!)

In this example, D:\ -T cdrom tells DOSBox that my D:\ drive is a CD-ROM drive, and the first D, tells DOSBox what my new drive name should be called. If you are running your game off a CD-ROM then make sure to use D: in place of C: in the following examples. You can find instructions on how to mount other devices, such as floppy drives, in the mount section).

After you've done this, you will be prompted with a Z:\>. Now, just write what you wanted to call your new DOSBox drive, which as I said above, we called C. To navigate to that newly mounted drive just type in:

Z:\>C: C:\>

Hopefully, you're all set! Now, it's time to run the game. Previously I had mentioned a game called TESTDRIV in my OLDGAMES folder. I now want DOSBox to go to that folder. So type in:

C:\>CD TESTDRIV C:\TESTDRIV>

That's it! CD stands for "Change Directory", so you've changed the directory to TESTDRIV. You can find instructions on how to use the Change Directory command, in the CD section of the Commands article.

One more step, running the game! Most games have an EXE file in their directory that you can run. However, some might require a BAT file, or COM file (common in demos and really old games). Most of the time, the file is in the root folder. Please consult the documentation of your game for which file is needed to start the game. In the case of Test Drive, it's TDCGA.EXE. So now, I just type this:

C:\TESTDRIV>TDCGA.EXE

That's it! Here's a picture of all of the commands I've written about in Step 2:

Wolfenstein 3D

The 1st-person shooter that started it all. As the Allies hero, B.J. Blazkowicz, you run around 3D mazes and blast away Nazis until you can find your way out of their fortresses, prisons, and secret laboratories.

It was a remake of the original top-down game Castle Wolfenstein.

Supaplex

A puzzle game with nice graphics and sound. Reminiscent of Boulder Dash; find the exit while collecting all Infotrons and avoiding the Zonks that can kill you.

SkyRoads

You could play this game just for the amazing sound tracks, but the gameplay is also very catchy. Simply, you need to steer your space vehicle along the course, jumping and dodging blocks that will wipe you out when you're flying along at light-speed. Balancing acceleration and fuel usage becomes tricky when you've got a time limit to beat with hardly any fuel in the tank. Your reflexes and timing will be the difference between getting home safely and floating aimlessly through space.

OutRun

A race against time. The goal is to make it through five stages. You have to finish each stage in the allocated time to move on, but leftover time is added to the next stage. Near the end of each stage, the road splits into two. The route you take will decide which destination you arrive at next and is shown in the bottom right corner on the diagram. Each one is slightly different.

Curves and cars are the main challenges. Going off the road could do as little as slow you down and as much as make you crash. Crashing into other cars will slow you down.

The key to this game is the gears. There are only two gears (H for high and L for low) but mastering them is necessary to succeed in OutRun. The low gear is better for navigating curves and cars, while the high gear gives you higher speeds and is best used on straight portions of the road. You start the race in L, and if you don't shift you won't even see other cars, but it'll be very hard to make checkpoints in time.

Use the low gear to speed up, but once you are going fast enough to see the green squares on the speedometer, switch to the high gear. Spend as much time in the high gear because going faster will net you more points and more extra time, giving you a better chance at completing all five stages.

AstroFire

is basically a run-of-the-mill Asteroids clone, but with a few twists: instead of asteroids you've got monsters of sorts to shoot at, there are power ups (two kinds of weapons) and shields (which means a single blow doesn't kill you), and you can also set whether or not you want momentum enabled, which gives an interesting edge to the game.

Prince of Persia 2

Your identity has been taken by the evil Grand Vizir Jaffar whome you defeated in the original Prince of Persia. Banished from your palace, you must fight to reclaim what is yours and save the Salaultan's lovely daughter.
